Temple Square in Salt Lake City

Today I took myself downtown to visit Temple Square.  It is surrounded by a high solid wall with several very beautiful tall iron gates.   Everything of importance is contained within these walls.  There are two visitor centers, one has a model of the Temple and the other has an 11' statue of Christ.  You are not allowed into the Temple which is why they have the model.  It seems to have all sorts of levels and different types of rooms. Some are quite intimate and others can accommodate varying numbers of worshippers.  In the same Visitor Center they had several examples of the furniture that was used in the temple.  Well let me tell you, these people don't let the Temple suffer, they may have suffered in many things but the Temple got only the best.  I was able to walk into any building without be accosted by a missionary.  Lots of people said hello and wished me a good day but that was it.

The Assembly Hall is a lovely looking building.  Inside it is just another church.  The Tabernacle is a fairly ugly building with a very good organ.  This is where the Mormon Tabernacle Choir practices and performs- duh.

Then I took a trip out to see the Great Salt Lake.  It is unimpressive and impressive at the same time.  It smells disgusting.  It is massive and has beautiful reeds along its edge.  There are all sorts of birds that live in the reeds.

After the  lake I headed off to Las Vegas.  It is 446 miles from Salt Lake City, so the rest of the day was spent in driving.  A truck driver did me a big favor.  I was going way over the speed limit, as usual, when the truck driver started to pull out in front of me but not really pull out.  He slowed me down and blocked me from a police car.  It was a close call.  I was so bored driving all those miles, the road is so straight.

Anyway I have arrived in the Las Vegas area and already I'm feeling all creepy.  There are casinos everywhere.

  1. Lucy--I finally got on your blog to see where you are in your trip. I love it! The photos are great and your commentary is wonderful. My family traveled out west when I was about 12 years old and some of your photos are bringing back great memories. Bryce Canyon and Mesa Verde were definitely the most memorable for me at that age. Bryce was just amazing to me. Anyway, I love reading about your adventures and will show the kids your photos tomorrow. The "Wooden Shoe" rock formation will definitely be a winner. Take care--Amy, Duncan, Ella and Little Duncan
